UDAP launched nationwide

The early part of the year witnessed three engaging information sessions, drawing widespread attention.

UDAP opens its digital doors to all road authorities and certified service providers across the Netherlands, offering access to many data services through the nation’s latest data platform. Crafted for seamless data exchange within the Talking Traffic initiative, this platform is a visionary project commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

Expanding connections: the integration of traffic light controllers and beyond

In recent developments, every traffic light controller in the country has been integrated with UDAP, setting the stage for even broader connectivity. In the years ahead, we plan to link diverse objects to UDAP, including bollards, sensors, and advanced measuring systems for tyre pressure and height clearance. This rapid data exchange capability of UDAP is set to significantly enhance traffic management, road safety, and environmental sustainability throughout the Netherlands.

Voices of innovation: the ministry’s vision for UDAP

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, as the driving force behind UDAP’s creation, anticipates substantial benefits from this initiative. The expectation is to achieve smoother traffic flows and advance road user information services. UDAP is not just about data exchange; it introduces critical functionalities like quality assurance, monitoring, and policy rule definition for vehicle priority, ensuring comprehensive service delivery.

“In the next year, we aim to deepen our understanding of data exchanges with smart objects and assess their impact on traffic dynamics, road safety, and environmental sustainability,” shares Vincent Habers, Senior Advisor ITS and a key figure in the Talking Traffic partnership, regarding the project’s future direction.

The backbone of rapid and reliable data exchange: Monotch’s role

Monotch is pivotal in facilitating UDAP’s operation, ensuring the swift and secure data exchange between intelligent traffic light controllers and road users. Menno Malta, CEO & Founder of Monotch, explains, “UDAP gathers data from a variety of roadside systems and efficiently distributes it to road authorities while also collecting anonymised data from road users.”

In addition to leveraging the TLEX software platform, Monotch oversees the data exchange process’s integrity, security, and confidentiality. An innovative dashboard provides transparent oversight of data status, while a proactive notification system, launched on March 1st, keeps road authorities informed about any disruptions in connectivity.

Empowering road authorities: governance and control at their fingertips

The information sessions offered a prime opportunity for road authorities, service providers, and system suppliers to familiarise themselves with UDAP’s capabilities. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants appreciating the comprehensive monitoring, reporting features, and the convenience of centralised management.

Jaco van Veldhuijsen, a Smart Mobility project manager from the Province of Utrecht, reflects on the operational benefits, “Having all resources centralised on UDAP provides a significant advantage in monitoring and managing regional traffic flows. The platform not only alerts us to disruptions but also offers actionable advice, enabling prompt and effective decision-making.”

As Monotch continues to innovate, the Urban Data Access Platform is a testament to our commitment to transforming urban mobility through technology, offering direct value to road authorities and a brighter future for urban transportation.
