The Urban Data Access Platform (UDAP)

This pioneering initiative, the Urban Data Access Platform (UDAP), is set to revolutionise data exchange between road users and roadside systems, including intelligent traffic controls, barriers, and sensors across the Netherlands.

A leap towards smarter mobility

UDAP, powered by Monotch’s TLEX software, aims to enhance traffic flow, bolster road safety, and promote environmental sustainability throughout the country. Our role extends beyond software provision; we ensure the quality, security, and privacy of the data exchanged through this innovative platform.

Nationwide traffic data innovation

By the close of September, a landmark agreement was inked with the Ministry, marking the beginning of a 4 to 8-year journey with Monotch at the helm of data services. Starting January 1st, 2021, all intelligent traffic light controllers in the Netherlands will be integrated with UDAP. This will facilitate seamless data interaction from many sources and offer significant benefits to road users, authorities, and research bodies alike.

Immediate impact and scalable solutions

From the onset in January 2021, the Traffic Light Controller (TLC) use cases – ‘informing, prioritising, and optimising’ – will start delivering immediate benefits. This includes the following:

  • information service advising on speeds for green waves,
  • priority service granting precedence to emergency vehicles, public transport, and cyclists at traffic lights,
  • and the optimising service.

All this will leverage vehicle data to enhance traffic flow across extensive road networks.

Expansion and connectivity

Looking ahead, the scale of connected, intelligent TLCs is set to expand nationally. There are also plans to integrate additional systems like tyre pressure measurement tools, bollards, and in-road sensors. This expansion promises to connect thousands of objects, significantly enriching the UDAP ecosystem.

Precision and reliability in data exchange

UDAP’s core mission of fast, reliable, and precise data exchange is bolstered by four additional functionalities:

  • quality control
  • and monitoring,
  • integration with various objects,
  • and a Priority Broker Configurator.

Real-time dashboards will provide comprehensive insights into the connected infrastructure and the effectiveness of data exchange initiatives.

Immediate advantages for traffic management

Vincent Habers, representing the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, acknowledges Monotch’s extensive experience with intelligent TLCs. He remarks, “With UDAP, we will go one step further with the service. We expect that UDAP will immediately yield benefits for traffic flows in many municipalities and that a range of different service providers can develop all kinds of useful in-car information services based on the data”.

This milestone marks a significant advancement towards smarter, safer, and more sustainable mobility solutions across the Netherlands, heralding a new era of data-driven traffic management and infrastructure optimisation.
