Empowering urban cycling: bicycle platoon recognition
25 Jun 2021[Project]
Enriching a network of safe and efficient bike lanes
Recognising this, municipalities and regional authorities are actively enhancing cycling infrastructure. This dedication involves developing and enriching a network of safe and efficient bike lanes. Essential to these efforts is acquiring accurate data on cycling patterns and the volume of bike traffic. Such insights enable informed decision-making and strategic planning.
Innovative pilot in Utrecht
In the heart of Utrecht, a pioneering project titled ‘Bicycle Platoon Recognition with Traffic Light Light Controllers (TLCs) is underway. This initiative seeks to enhance traffic light responsiveness based on real-time bicycle traffic, ensuring smoother bike flow and more effective traffic light operation. The project aims to facilitate a seamless urban cycling experience by dynamically adjusting signal times.
Prioritising cyclists
Utilising advanced radar technology linked to Monotch’s TLEX/UDAP data platform, the pilot accurately detects cycling platoons. This allows cyclists to be prioritised at traffic signals, ensuring they receive timely green lights. The more cyclists detected, the higher the priority assigned. This technology improves cyclist flow and underscores Monotch’s commitment to urban mobility solutions.
Gathering crucial cycling data
Employing Cycledata’s High-Quality Cycle Data Radar (HQCDR) empowers local authorities with precise cycling data. These insights are vital for understanding and enhancing traffic flow, thereby informing decisions on mobility policies and infrastructure adjustments. Monotch’s interface directly contributes to this process by optimising traffic light performance in line with detected cycling trends.
Influence traffic flows
“Thanks to the connection with the Monotch TLEX platform and its advanced UDAP successor, our clients can now directly influence traffic flows using collected data. This integration marks a significant enhancement to our HQCDR offering, providing invaluable support to municipalities and provinces,” states Cees van der Zijl from Cycledata.
UPDATE CYCLEDATA
Despite CycleData ceasing operations, the capabilities for bicycle data integration with the TLEX platform remain intact. Monotch encourages interested parties to reach out for more information, reaffirming its commitment to advancing urban cycling infrastructure and support.
