Emergency vehicle approaching alert via UDAP

Revolutionising traffic in The Netherlands
Imagine driving in the Netherlands and being seamlessly informed about an ambulance, fire brigade, or police car approaching you. This isn’t just an idea—it’s a reality, thanks to the Urban Data Access Platform (UDAP).
UDAP has been revolutionising how traffic data is shared for over a year, aiming to make Dutch roads safer. It’s not just about receiving warnings; it’s about connecting emergency services with road users through navigation services and car manufacturers, enhancing safety and anticipation.
Easing the way for emergency services
We’ve all experienced the sudden jolt from an emergency vehicle’s siren. Often, it’s too late to react appropriately. UDAP is changing that. Through timely EVA (Emergency Vehicle Approaching) messages, drivers receive crucial information, reducing startle reactions and ensuring a smoother path for emergency vehicles. This proactive approach doesn’t just enhance safety; it saves lives by ensuring emergency services reach their destinations faster and more securely.
Seamless data exchange with UDAP
Monotch’s project manager, Mark Walker, underscores the platform’s vast capabilities: “In the meantime, around 1 billion messages are exchanged via the UDAP platform. About 60 road authorities and more than 1200 smart roadside devices are connected, including, for example, smart traffic lights and bollards.” This technology allows for instantaneous data sharing, keeping drivers informed about emergency vehicles’ direction and distance. This precision ensures that only relevant users are alerted, maintaining focus and safety on the roads.
A global leader in road safety
The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is committed to enhancing road safety through technology. At the beginning of July 2022, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management launched a collaboration with six companies under the heading Safety Priority Services to boost in-car warnings for potentially unsafe situations, including emergency services. This initiative, leveraging UDAP, is pivotal in informing drivers about approaching emergency vehicles timely, contributing significantly to road safety.
Understanding the intricacies of road safety, Monotch is at the forefront of creating a connected, secure, and efficient mobility ecosystem. Through innovation and collaboration, we’re making roads safer for everyone. Join us in this journey, where every second counts, and every alert brings us closer to our destination—safely.
