Safer, smoother, and greener

This initiative aims for safer, smoother, and greener travel via innovative data management and technology. Mobilidata introduces a robust network of smart, sustainable, and dependable data sources, enabling collaboration across policymakers, businesses, government departments, residents, and app developers. This collective effort enhances traffic flow, sustainability, comfort, and safety for all.

Monotch and the digital road network

Be-Mobile, leading a consortium including Flitsmeister, NDrive, Bosch, Monotch, and others, has been entrusted with the digital network assignment. Monotch plays a crucial role by facilitating C-ITS message exchanges within the ecosystem, utilising its Traffic Live Exchange (TLEX) platform for seamless traffic light data communication. Flanders supports this transformative programme with a substantial investment of 18.2 million euros.

The golden value of data in mobility

Data dubbed the new “gold” fuels mobility solutions in Flanders through a sustainable digital infrastructure and application-driven data usage. The consortium aims to unveil 31 innovative traffic initiatives, fostering a network of intelligent, eco-friendly data sources. These innovations cater to specific mobility demands and empower road authorities to prioritise road users effectively, enhancing road safety, traffic flow, and environmental sustainability.

Intelligent traffic control

The Mobilidata initiative prominently features intelligent traffic light controllers (TLCs) rollout designed to harmonise traffic safety and flow. These intelligent controllers aim for conflict-free intersections and offer tailored priorities, such as expedited green lights for cyclists, ambulances, and trucks, improving efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

Leveraging global C-ITS experience

Monotch, leveraging its experience from successful implementations in other European countries, brings the TLEX platform to Mobilidata for bidirectional C-ITS data exchange. “As a consortium partner, we bring relevant experience from other European countries where our TLEX platform has already been used successfully to develop new connected traffic services, with countless benefits. In the Netherlands, recent measurements indicate a 10% reduction in travel time for prioritised transport, 2% fewer incidents with emergency vehicles and a significant 15% waiting time and emission reduction for traffic passing an intersection, which also offers a perspective for Flanders,” shares Menno Malta, CEO of Monotch.

Mobilidata: a commitment to progress

Mobilidata represents the Flemish government’s dedication to fostering an accessible, safe, and environmentally friendly mobility environment. Through the concerted efforts of various stakeholders, including governmental and European entities, Mobilidata sets ambitious goals to improve accessibility, safety, and the quality of life in Flanders, highlighting a path towards a sustainable and integrated mobility future.

About Mobilidata

Providing free-flowing, safe ways of getting around is essential for the Flemish government. That is why the Agency for Roads and Traffic, imec, Department of Mobility and Public Works, Department of Economy, Science and Innovation, Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Connecting Europe Facility have put an ambitious programme in place in Flanders, called Mobilidata. The programme has set some ambitious goals, namely guaranteeing accessibility and mobility, improving liveability in Flanders while increasing road safety, and reducing environmental and natural damage.
