Celebrating TLEX®: five years of innovation
07 Apr 2022[Milestone]
The journey begins
The globally acclaimed C-ITS platform, TLEX®, marks its fifth anniversary, boasting an astounding daily message handling of over 1.4 billion. Launching in April 2017 within the Talking Traffic initiative, TLEX® began without the advanced features we see today, yet it laid the groundwork for the unfolding smart mobility revolution.
Reflecting on the journey, Menno Malta, CEO of Monotch, shares, “I can confidently say we are most proud of the robustness and the performance of TLEX®. It is truly impressive to see this amount of data exchange. We are very content that our platform has very high uptime, no security issues, and is safe to use.”
Early steps to success
Initially, TLEX® connected with the first Traffic Light Controllers in the Netherlands, introducing the country to its first smart traffic light intersections. This breakthrough set the stage for TLEX®’s expansion and its foundational role in enhancing Dutch traffic management.
Crossing borders
By 2018, every new Traffic Light Controller (TLC) in the Netherlands was integrated into TLEX®, enhancing the platform’s data exchange capabilities. That year also marked TLEX®’s international debut with successful tests in Trondheim, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark, paving the way for global recognition at the 25th ITS World Congress in Copenhagen with the Best Technical Paper Award.
Recognitions and awards
2019 was a landmark year for TLEX®, highlighted by winning the Automotive Innovation Award for its potential to significantly improve traffic flow and safety. Further acclaim came with the Automotive Brand Contest award at the International Automobil Ausstellung in Frankfurt, emphasizing TLEX®’s impact on connectivity.
TLEX project highlights
The CONCORDA project and NordicWay3 are among the international initiatives leveraging TLEX® for connected and automated driving. In the Netherlands, TLEX® fueled projects like SmartwayZ.nl, focusing on Green Light Optimal Speed Advice (GLOSA), Digital Traffic Management Rules, and Smart Routing. Additionally, the DALI project explored datafication in logistics, showcasing TLEX®’s versatility across various mobility sectors.
Building a data-driven transportation
2020 saw TLEX® become the backbone of the Dutch national urban data platform, UDAP, signifying its central role in shaping the country’s mobility landscape. Through partnerships with Dutch, British, and Finnish companies, TLEX® continues to expand its influence, demonstrating its utility in projects like the DATACLEP pilot in the Moerdijk harbour.
Vision for the future
Looking ahead, Menno Malta envisions continued growth and innovation for TLEX®, stating, “We can see many new projects and milestones that we will be sharing in 2022. We keep working on large and international deployments and planning for new ones with our team. Smart mobility isn’t a thing from the future; it is already happening, and Monotch is in the forefront.”
