Digital Tracking System (Road works warning)

The Roads and Traffic Agency (Agenschap Wegen en Verkeer, AWV), the Flemish road authority, is proactive and uses modern techniques to make traffic safer for everyone.

One area where road safety could use extra help is roadworks. For example, in 2020, there were 11 fatal accidents and 443 accidents with injuries at roadworks in Flanders.

Naturally, all kinds of measures are being taken to improve safety around roadworks. Nevertheless, a Digital Tracking System is a valuable addition to traditional methods, such as warning signs and physical barriers.

Now that the Digital Tracking System is live, roadworks warnings can be automatically shown to drivers. Although the main purpose of deploying the DTS is, of course, to promote road safety, AWV is pleased to see that it also has a positive impact on other parts of the chain.
