Digital Tracking System (Road Works Warning)

As part of the Flemish Mobilidata programme, the Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer – AWV) implemented the Digital Tracking System (DTS) to automatically provide real-time Road Works Warning (RWW) services to connected vehicles and navigation services. This proven connected mobility deployment helps improve road safety by warning drivers about static and mobile roadworks before they reach the affected location.

Roadworks remain one of the most hazardous environments on the road network. In 2020, roadworks in Flanders resulted in 11 fatal accidents and 443 injury accidents. While warning signs and physical barriers remain essential, AWV recognised that connected mobility services can provide drivers with earlier, more relevant warnings and improve safety for both road workers and road users.

Within the Mobilidata programme, the Digital Tracking System demonstrates how secure real-time data exchange enables transportation agencies, road operators and mobility service providers to collaborate in delivering proactive Road Works Warning (RWW) services. Through connected vehicles and navigation services, drivers receive timely information that improves situational awareness, supports safer driving behaviour and helps reduce traffic disruption around temporary roadworks.
